The Gospel of Mark chronicles the actions and teachings of Jesus and is probably the first written biography of his life. Mark wrote his gospel as a drama, meant to draw us in and reveal some surprising insights about Jesus. If you’re intrigued by Jesus, come join the crowds in Mark who constantly press around him, straining their ears to hear his words and craning their necks to watch his miracles. But be prepared: though Jesus frequently drew crowds and excited the masses, few people actually understood him, including for a long time his closest disciples! The same still holds true today. Jesus is hip again but not necessarily known as he really is. We glue him to our dashboards but only for good luck. We put him on t-shirts but bungle his actual message. We politely pat him on the head with “good teacher” compliments but don’t let him be who he said he was. The same thing happened when Jesus lived. So the Gospel of Mark will help us get beyond the Jesus of pop-culture to the real man, as he really was (and is!).
