“They will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake,” said Jesus to his disciples (Mark 13:9). Turns out, Jesus was right. Paul the Apostle has experienced all of this, and as he pens the letter to the Philippians, he’s locked in a Roman jail, awaiting trial before Caesar.
In fact, this isn’t just true for Jesus, Paul, and a few super-disciples. Sickness, loneliness, confusion, frustration, and fatigue are common human experiences. “In this world you will have much trouble” (John 16:33). And yet, in the midst of such trouble, Paul writes the most joyful book in the Bible, a letter bursting with light.
Why this odd marriage between prison and joy, loneliness and contentment, confusion and calm? Because “much trouble” isn’t all Jesus predicted. “I have said these things to you that in me, you may have peace…take heart, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Turns out, Jesus was right about that too.
