Jesus’ main message was, “Repent and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15). As the early church grew, their main message was about “repentance toward God and faith in the Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21, 24:24). But what is belief? What is faith? For that matter, what is this gospel we’re supposed to believe and who is this Jesus we’re supposed to have faith in?
Unfortunately, it’s often hard to get clear answers, even from Jesus-folk. They use many different tags to describe themselves. Some are “Christians,” others “followers of Jesus,” others simply “believers.” But what does it mean to be a Christian/follower of Jesus/believer? How would you become one if you wanted to? If you’re already a Christian/follower of Jesus/believer, is your faith/belief/following the same as what the original Christians/followers/believers believed?
In this series, we are dealing with these important and foundational questions. We’ll start with Jesus himself and his message, “Repent and believe the gospel.” We’ll see what the gospel is all about, what Jesus life, death, and resurrection is all about, and what it means to respond in faith. And take heart: though Christians/Jesus-followers/believers can be kind of muddled, Jesus and his disciples were clear. A simple re-reading of their teaching can cut through confusion and positively set forth what it means to have faith in Jesus.
