FELLOWSHIP DENVER KIDS
SUNDAY, JUNE 21
On June 21 our students are beginning a three-week journey into the Book of Hebrews. Each year, Israel was required to atone for their sin by offering a sacrifice. The high priest would enter the holy of holies and intercede for himself and the people. But Jesus changed Israel's entire system of atonement. He offered His own life as the perfect, final sacrifice for our sin. Thus He is now our great High Priest and he provides assurance of a new covenant of grace.
Toddler Text Truth: Jesus wants to help people.
Preschool Text Truth: Jesus wants to help everyone who asks.
Younger Kids Text Truth: Jesus is our great High Priest—He paid for our sin once and for all.
Older Kids Text Truth: Our great High Priest, Jesus, fulfilled the old covenant and secured a new, superior covenant of grace.
Christ in Context: The Book of Hebrews describes how Jesus fulfilled the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament as the Son of God and the Son of man. Jesus gave His life as the final sacrifice for sin, establishing a new covenant between God and His people. He is our mediator, creator, high priest, and rescuer. He is perfect and reigns over all.
The Book of Hebrews, Hebrews 3, 5, & 7
The writer of Hebrews wanted to help God’s people understand how Jesus fulfilled the promises God made in the Old Testament Scriptures. The writer said that Jesus is better than anything that the people had before including the high priest.
The high priest offered gifts and sacrifices for sin. He served God for the people. The high priest was a human so he understood what temptation, sin, and weakness were. The high priest not only offered sacrifices on behalf of the people, he also had to offer sacrifices to seek God’s forgiveness for his own sins.
God chose each high priest. Jesus was chosen by God to be our great High Priest. Jesus is the source of eternal salvation.
God promised to send a priest who was also a king. Who did God send? Jesus! Jesus is the assurance of a better covenant, a better hope.
The Levite priests were temporary because each one eventually died. Jesus is our priest forever. Because He is permanently the great High Priest, Jesus is able to save those who repent and trust Him as their Savior and Lord.
We need a perfect, holy, sinless high priest. Because Jesus was holy, He did not have to offer God a sacrifice for His own sin. Instead, He gave Himself as our perfect, holy sacrifice, once and for all to pay the price for our sin.
