Introduction

Faith in Christ is always contested. Ideologies clash, worldviews collide, and truth claims compete for allegiance in the marketplace of ideas, tempting Christians to abandon Christ for His rivals. This is the primary pastoral concern that Hebrews was written to address. The original recipients were being tempted by suffering and social pressure to turn away from Christ and go back to Judaism. Hebrews, then, is to show the supremacy of Christ over every rival claim and to urge Christians to persevere in wholehearted allegiance to Jesus.

Text:
Read Hebrews 2:1-4 and pray.

Chapter Summary
: Hebrews 2:1–4 warns believers to pay close attention to the message of salvation so they don’t slowly drift away from Christ. It emphasizes that this salvation is certain—declared by Jesus, confirmed by eyewitnesses, and attested by God through miracles and the Holy Spirit—making neglect of it a dangerously foolish act.

Discussion Questions

1. “Pay Much Closer Attention” (v. 1)
The writer warns that if we don’t “pay much closer attention” to what we’ve heard, we risk drifting away from Christ. In light of this warning, what specific truths about Jesus from Chapter 1 do you need to pay closer attention to so you don’t drift (See 1:1-4)?

2. “Lest We Drift Away” (v. 1)
If a boat drifts slightly off course, it can end up thousands of miles from its destination. In the same way, we can slowly and almost imperceptibly start to drift away from our faith and ultimately abandon Christ altogether. Where do you see subtle “drift” happening in your own heart, habits, or priorities—and how does this verse call you back?

3. “How Shall We Escape if We Neglect Such a Great Salvation?” (v. 3)
Neglecting God’s words and warnings has always led to pain and judgment. Adam and Eve ignored God’s command about the tree, Pharaoh hardened his heart against God’s command to let His people go, and Israel turned from God’s law to worship the gods of the nations. Every time, ignoring God’s word brought devastating consequences. If that was true then, how much more serious is it for us—who have received God’s final word in Christ—to neglect such a great salvation? What does it look like today to “neglect” the great salvation offered in Christ, and what steps can you take this week to honor it?
