Introduction
Faith in Christ is always contested. Ideologies clash, worldviews collide, and truth claims compete for allegiance in the marketplace of ideas, tempting Christians to abandon Christ for His rivals. This is the primary pastoral concern that Hebrews was written to address. The original recipients were being tempted by suffering and social pressure to turn away from Christ and go back to Judaism. Hebrews, then, is to show the supremacy of Christ over every rival claim and to urge Christians to persevere in wholehearted allegiance to Jesus.
Text: Read Hebrews 4:11-13 and pray.
Passage Summary: Hebrews 4:11-13 warns believers to strive diligently to enter God’s rest, because God’s Word penetrates and exposes every thought and intention of the heart, leaving no one hidden from His judgment.
Discussion Questions
1. “Therefore, let us strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience” (v11). In light of Israel’s failure to enter God’s rest (i.e. promised land) because of unbelief, Hebrews 4:11 urges believers to make every effort to trust and obey God so that they do not repeat that same disobedience and miss the eternal rest He promises in Christ.
If entering God’s rest ultimately depends on faith, what does it mean to “strive” or “make every effort” without turning faith into works?
2. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (v12). This verse explains why we must “strive” to enter God’s rest, namely, because God’s Word is living and active, and it cuts past all our facades to expose our true thoughts, motives, and intentions.
When you read Scripture, do you approach it as something you stand over and analyze—or as something you sit under and allow to analyze you? What are some practical ways you can approach the Bible not merely as a book to master, but as a book meant to master you?
3. “And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (v13). Nothing in creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything about us—our actions, thoughts, and desires is fully exposed before the One to whom we must give account.
How might your daily choices or hidden thoughts change if you truly lived with an awareness that sees every part of you and nothing is hidden from his eyes?
