Take Heart

_Warm-up_

• In times of crisis and worry, there are TONS of voices vying for our attention. What are some of the loudest voices in your ears right now? What would it take to listen well to God’s voice over and above all other voices?

//BIG IDEA

• In Jesus’ last formal teaching to his disciples he tells them to “take heart.” While this might sound like a weak religious platitude, it really isn’t. In fact, to take heart is the “calculus” of following Jesus, which is why it’s that last thing he teaches his disciples.

• To “take heart” means to be bold and courageous in the face of danger.

• The “troubles” we face in this world–including pandemics–teach us to “take heart” and act with courage.

• Jesus knew we would fail at “taking heart,” but through his victory on the cross and resurrection, when we are “in him,” he gives us his power so that we can be courageous even in the midst of fear.

John 16:28-33

I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

//DISCUSS

_Old Self_

• The disciples were afraid when Jesus said he was going to leave them. How does fear influence how you act towards others? How does fear impact what you believe about God and the world?

• When Jesus told his disciples to “take heart,” they failed to act with courage. Thankfully that wasn’t the end of the story for them; yet, for you and I, what are ways we are struggling to “take heart” right now?

_New Self_

• Jesus gives his disciples a great reason why they could act with great courage; he had already overcome all that the world could do to him! What are ways that Jesus’ victory gives us power and courage we need today to overcome fear?

• To be “in Christ” means that all of his spiritual resources are now ours! Therefore, in Him and through Him we can truly take heart. What are ways being “in Him” can change your attitude and outlook this week?

_World_

• As the world is in fear, encourage each other to take heart and be courageous. Think of 5 practical ways you and your FG can act courageously this week. As you come up with these, share them with other FGs. This week is a huge opportunity for Jesus’ people to be light in a dark world!
